How to Protect My Air Conditioner from copper thieves

My Neighbors AC Was All Torn Apart

With the economy in such a mess these days, thieves are coming out of the wood works. On the news the other day I heard some creeps in our town are now punching holes in the bottom of gas tanks on vehicles and draining the gas into a container so they can pour it into their vehicle.

My neighbor asked me if I had seen someone suspicious in the neighborhood lately and after telling him I did not he told me that someone ripped his air conditioner apart. That had me thinking kids right away, but when I saw the mess I realized whoever did it actually used tools and the most important part of the ac was missing. The copper had been cut out. It was the only part with a clean cut. Looks like snips where used to cut both ends in order for the copper to be taken out.

I didn’t realize that copper was selling for so much that thieves would consider steeling it to cash it in for a few bucks. Turns out about 10 of the neighbors on the street fell victim to whoever stole the copper from my neighbor, it was pure lottery that mine did not get touched. Fearing the copper thieves would return I quickly did a search on line for some kind of protection and found a website that had exactly what I needed.

I let my dog konan, a 125 lb rottweiler, stay out side for about a week while I waited for an air conditioner cage to be shipped. Once I got it, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install. Took me about 35 minutes and very little tools. Well worth the investment, even though so far the copper thieves have not been back.

If you would like to save yourself a couple thousand dollars, that’s what it cost my neighbor to replace his air conditioner I highly recommend you check out this website http://ac-guard.com They have a cool adjustable cage that fits any size air conditioner and I even found a video on their site which I watched before installing mine, which helped a ton.

Copper Thievery on the Rise

Copper thievery is definitely

a  catastrophe  crime throughout the  nation  as well as the  world .   Police in certain states have reported that thieves are actually targeting the growing numbers of vacant, foreclosed houses  to steal copper wiring .  Copper theft requires a limited number of tools.  Copper thieves don’t have to be highly trained technicians.  Copper theft prevention is a problem of service/business delivery, reliability and safety.  Businesses should do something to guard and stop against this risk.  Copper thieves are generally breaking into vacant commercial buildings and specifically targeting the rooftops of buildings, since the rooftops are one of the most vulnerable areas for copper thieves to attack.

Many unemployed plumbers and electricians are intelligently and systematically conducting the copper thefts because they have inside knowledge to commit the crimes.  An  air conditioner cage  can protect you from both vandalism and theft (the large scrap value of the copper and steel parts within the air conditioner unit are prone to theft).

For these exact two reasons many air conditioning companies are now using AC cages, air conditioner cages to protect their customer’s air conditioner.  AC Cages offer similar benefits to burglar bars in a residential or commercial residence: physical protection against damage and theft, easy installation that can be done by the average handyman, and low hardware costs.  AC cages, or air conditioner protection was not something we really needed to think about a few years ago, but since the air conditioner became more complex and therefore more expensive this kind of damage can cost thousands of dollars in repair and the way to get some kind of ac protection is either installing an ac cages or an ac alarm.

The air conditioner cages

are much more cost effective then the ac alarm and are easier to install.  Especially when it’s getting an air conditioner cage or facing with having to replace your whole air conditioning.  The Air Conditioner Cages are fully welded 1″ tube steel with seamless construction and a heavy gauge expanded mesh metal exterior.   They feature industrial paint or are powder coated for rust protection and durability, and the units provide full accessibility for service or maintenance.  Install locking steel cages over HVAC equipment (such as air conditioning units) and other outdoor equipment that contains copper components.

It’s not too hard for a thief to acquire copper from an air conditioning unit. Commercial buildings are an easy target on the days that no one is working. Most of the time the units are on roofs, or behind buildings that hide them from view of passer by’s. Many commercial companies are turning to an air conditioner cage as the answer to detour thieves.

The Air Conditioner Cage is specially designed to block easy access to the copper in the unit and at the same time allows the unit to work at it’s normal run. For an example of an air conditioner cage please visit ac-guard.com
